insights of a Nexus 9516

The main usage of this equipment is iPhone charger.
Beyond this major achievement, you might be interested by some pictures of the insides of this animal.

Chassis:

First of all, the sheet metal chassis does not look pretty…
This being said, we realize that the hardware design is very compact .

I like the fact that linecards modules are directly plugged into fabric cards.
There is no real middle plane except a nice machined aluminium brace.

Fabric modules themselves are covered by the fans (rear of the chassis).

rear of the chassis, we can see some linecards modules behind the aluminium brace

Linecards and Fabric:

8x100 Gb/s CFP2 linecard equiped with 8 NFE

8×100 Gb/s CFP2 linecard
equipped with 2 NFE (Trident2)

another linecard with two NFE only

another linecard (48×1/10 Gig)

This NFE is located on a Fabric card. This sounds weird, but remember that this machine uses a three stage forwarding process : ingress LC > Fabric > egress LC

This Network Forwarding Engine is located on linecards and fabric cards (4 of them on a 9516 Fabric module).
This sounds weird, but remember that this machine uses a three stage forwarding process :
ingress LC > Fabric > egress LC
